Lighthouse Museum's Lighthouse of the Week

The Staten Island Lighthouse Museum is one of Staten Island’s treasures. Staten Island won a very competitive bid to house the Lighthouse Museum in 1998. It received $8 million dollars to erect the museum, but local politicians squandered the opportunity — some say purposely so that the land could be used instead for a luxury condominium complex.

After 10 years of going nowhere, an intrepid do-gooder named Linda Dianto came along and got the Lighthouse Museum going, gaining sponsorship from locals at the many fund-raising events for the Lighthouse Museum that she ran.

Thanks to Dianto’s incredible, tireless efforts over many years — the Lighthouse Museum flourishes in St George, Staten Island.

Staten Island won the original bid because its location in St George near the Ferry terminal was the original location where the Fresnel lenses were shipped to from Europe — reconstructed at the facility and then redistributed to lighthouses across the US. The location also housed the lighter fluid for lighthouses — in an underground cave at the facility (which also happens to be directly underneath land where the first tennis courts in the US were built, by Mary Outerbridge).

The Staten Island Lighthouse Museum is a wonderful museum to visit. They also have regularly scheduled in-museum events and performances, a regular-schedule of boat tours which are a ton of fun, and a newsletter that promotes a Lighthouse of the Week — that they do in combination with Lighthouse Friends.
