Imagine people from any era before the 1950’s attending the Staten Island Mall in the dead of winter. An incredible indoor city — warm, comfortable, and alive with people, stores, eateries, easy-to-access bathrooms.
The mall opened in 1973. It is owned by Brookfield Properties of Chicago, Illinois, which is a division of Brookfield Asset Management, whose U.S. operations are based in Manhattan.
The mall has 200 stores employing approximately 3,000 people. Anchor tenants include JCPenney, Macy’s, Lidl, and Primark.
The current Food District of the Mall includes Dave and Buster’s and an AMC Theatres dine-in cinema.
The land that the mall is on was once occupied by the Staten Island Airport, which opened in 1941. The site was sold in 1955 to a group that intended to build the mall.
