Movies Set on Staten Island: “The First Purge”

Written and directed by native Staten Islander James DeMonaco, “The First Purge” was actually the 4th of the trilogy of “The Purge” films — it was a prequel that was supposed to take place before the first film, “The Purge”.

Filmed in 2018, “The First Purge” was set in Staten Island — but was not filmed in Staten Island! It was filmed in Buffalo, NY !

In fact none of “The Purge” films have been filmed in Staten Island. But “The First Purge” pretends to be on Staten Island — Staten Island is key to its premise, as it is an island, and in the movie — all the bridges are closed so that the Purge can take place.

Plot

The film depicts the origins of the annual “Purge”, a 12-hour span once a year in which all crime in America, including murder, rape and arson, is decriminalized — as advocated and allowed by a new political party, called the New Founding Fathers.

According to the movie, written by native Staten Islander DeMonaco, “the Purge” originates as an experiment confined to Staten Island with the promise that those who stay on the island for its duration will be paid $5,000.

Propaganda Film

“The First Purge” has intonations that denigrate the Make America Great Again (MAGA) 3rd Party movement of President Donald Trump — but flips the message to be one of violence. In this regard, the film may be considered a Propaganda film.

“The First Purge” is an anti-MAGA propaganda film. I have no use for seeing this garbage.
